Chicago Otterbein University 2019 - Scenic Carpenter

This multi-level set was built mostly out of tube steel, and plywood. The arches were cold-bends, we created jigs for these by finding the radius of the arch needed, and creating a circular jig by reducing the radius by various percentages until we got the steel bent to the correct size. This set also included a lot of plywood and foam appliques and trim, to get the details correct we had printed the designs out to scale and adhered them to the material to create templates, then used a router to make exact copies.

West Side Story Utah Festival Opera & Musical Theatre 2019 - Scenic Carpenter & Stage OPerations Staff

This show was the first show I had worked on as a scenic carpenter where I learned more about building shows for repertory; while building elements for this show we modified how various units attached to each other as a field connection, so that the pieces could be both constructed, and stored efficiently when this show was not running. I worked alongside a team of 12 others including carpenters, carpentry interns, and ATD’s when participating in changeovers post show run.

Chicago Theatre Aspen 2021 - Scenic Apprentice

Set constructed by United Scenic, as one of two scenic apprentices I helped to layout lines on the floor for the floor painting, I helped to load in the set itself, worked on carving, texturing and painting the bricks, install the red vinyl behind the walls, install the conduit on the walls, and construct stairs with pneumatic brakes on them so that they could be moved and used safely throughout the show

Rock of Ages Theatre Aspen 2021 - Scenic Apprentice

For this show I was a Scenic Apprentice and Deck Carpenter. After the initial install of the scenery from United Scenic, we used this set for Chicago then completed a multi-day changeover to create the look for Rock of Ages, ( see Chicago above to see what we started from for this changeover). During this change over, the scenic team worked on several elements, including: strike and install new vinyl on the walls, install the “Bourbon Room” sign, strike and cut down and paint some of the columns, hang the posters onto the brick, construct/install a few small units (such as step units), paint the V-shaped stripes on the floor, and install the platforms for the band to use during the show.

Newsies Utah Fesitval Opera & Musical Theatre 2019 - Scenic Carpenter & Stage OPerations Staff

This show was also run in repertory along with West Side Story (above), we had an hour to changeover from one show to another, therefore we had to create scenic elements that could easily be loaded-in and struck, such as the folding platform bases. As for the light boxes, there was LED tape placed behind the upstage wall windows, but the light was very diffused. I was asked to create these boxes that could be opened and closed so that the lights inside were accessible for the electrics team; the boxes were made from ripped plywood and muslin, and attached with piano hinges. Along helping construct this production, I was also on the team that ran this show’s deck and the changeover immediately following the show run.

The School for Scandal Otterbein University 2020 - Scenic Carpenter

This production required multiple cold-bends of steel to create arch shapes for the false-proscenium. We also created several sets of false legs by welding steel frames, adding furring strips to the back, and stretching muslin across the units. We also created the portrait wall by welding some rectangular shapes and adding plywood, and also by cutting the circle/oval shapes from plywood first, and framing to fit with the steel.

Theory of Relativity Otterbein University Theatre and Dance 2020 - Scenic Carpenter

This production was different from others that I have worked on because we used foam for a majority of this set. The puzzle pieces were cut from foamular 4’x8’ sheets - the graphics were printed out on a plotter and we adhered them to lauan, and then adhered the lauan to the foam. This set required precision and care as we as a team were trying to avoid having to reprint out the puzzle pieces if there were to be an error. The cube shaped blocks that made up the rest of the set were constructed from plywood and pine, and utilized biscuit joints.
